As you would expect at the world’s largest aviation event the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture -Oshkosh there is a lot to see and do. The tour includes 6 action packed days on Wittman Field, home of EAA. Oshkosh never fails to deliver – it has an amazing mix of pretty much every conceivable form of aviation both on the ground and in the air.

Oshkosh has it all if you love the thrill & excitement of Aviation.

On-route to Oshkosh we will visit the outstanding Harley Davidson Museum.

DAYTON & WASHINGTON DC TOUR

We are offering travel options which can be added to the Oshkosh tour, it complements the world’s largest aviation event.
Over an additional 7 days we will visit:

Description

To visit and experience EAA AirVenture Oshkosh at Wittman Regional Airport is a “Must Do” for Aviators, Aviation Photographers, Aviation Historians & Enthusiasts. In 2018 the number of aircraft visiting, on display and performing was amazing, nothing like it in the world today.

  • 10,000 plus visiting aircraft
  • 2,885 show planes including 1,124 home builds/kits, 1,032 vintage and classics, 371 warbirds, 135 microlights, 101 floatplanes, 31 helicopters and 41 aerobatic aircraft
  • 891+ trade exhibitors in 5 huge exhibition halls
  • 1,050 forums and workshops attended by more than 75,000 people.

There were over 15,000 aircraft movements at Wittman Regional Airport at EAA Oshkosh event in 2018 making it the world’s busiest airport at the time.

In addition, there is:

  • Giant Fly Market selling non-aviation and aviation items (from whole to bits of aircraft)
  • See 800 plus general aviation aircraft companies with their latest products
  • The floatplane ‘Splash-In’ on nearby Lake Winnebago
  • Optional pleasure flights in a B-17 Flying Fortress, Ford Trimotor and Bell 47 helicopters
  • Demonstration flights during the mornings
  • A daily Airshow each afternoon including warbirds with pyrotechnics
  • The EAA’s Pioneer Air Museum: a large collection of immaculate aeroplanes including rare types and world record-breakers

We stay in Oshkosh itself, in the Horizon Village hall of residence (Air Conditioned Suites with WIFI) on the campus of the University of Wisconsin (UWO), on a room only basis.

Tour Itinerary: OSHKOSH TOUR plus Ultimate DAYTON & WASHINGTON DC TOURS 2019

DAY 1: Saturday 20th July

After long flights you will look forward to a relaxing night at the Hilton Hotel (included in tour cost) located at the O’Hare International Airport. When you collect your luggage make your way to the hotel which is by an internal walkway between the terminal and the hotel.

We have requested rooms with views of the Chicago Airport runways.


DAY 2: Sunday 21st July

We board our air-conditioned luxury coach at 10:00 for our drive north to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. We will make a stop at the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee; time to enjoy a tour (Museum tour cost is included) and/ lunch in their café. (at your own expense). At 14:00 we depart for Oshkosh.

Later that afternoon (approx 16:00) we arrive at the University Wisconsin (UWO) in Oshkosh and check in to your room at the Horizon Village; we stay 7 nights in air conditioned suites (with high speed WIFI).


DAY 3 to Day 8: Monday 22nd to Saturday 27th July

You have 6 full days at AirAdventure Oshkosh 2019 to enjoy the thrill and excitement at your own leisure. Each morning there are multiple streams of aircraft landing one after the other on both runways, plus demonstration flights of new aircraft.

In the afternoons at 14:30 the daily Airshow takes off, featuring antiques, classics and new types. On several days there are specially extended Airshows featuring warbirds – with lots of pyrotechnics including the awesome, mile-long ‘Wall of Fire’! You will see two night airshows, Wednesday and Saturday.

You can catch a shuttle from the crowds on Wittman Field to the relative peace and quiet of the wooded shores of Lake Winnebago, and the beautiful floatplane base which is home to the EAA’s “Splash-In”. You can see 50 or more floatplanes ranging in size from small Cessna’s and Cubs, to larger types like the Grumman HU-16 Albatross, Catalina, and even a rare Piaggio. Relax in the shade; enjoy a drink, a BBQ or sandwich. Jump on board the electric boat for a tour around the anchorage. Most days pleasure flights are available!


DAY 9: Sunday 28th July

This morning our coach departs the UWO campus at 09:00 and heads south, en-route a stop will be made for lunch (at your own expense).

North of Chicago is the town of Kenosha; at the airfield is one of “Sanders Aeronautics” restoration facilities. This company is famous for restoring warbirds – especially Hawker Sea Fury’s! We hope to be given a short tour, (visit to be confirmed); if it is we may depart the UWO slightly earlier).

We arrive at O’Hare International airport in the afternoon for flight connections back to Australia or transfer to your next destination. And we say goodbye to those continuing on the Dayton and Washington DC Tour.

DAY 1: Sunday 28th July

This morning our coach departs the UWO campus at 09:00 and heads south, en-route a stop will be made for lunch (at your own expense). We continue to the small town of Logansport, Indiana where we stay overnight on a bed and breakfast basis. Facilities include indoor swimming pool and free Wi-Fi.


DAY 2: Monday 29th July

Today we drive a few kilometers to the Grissom Air Base Museum. The museum was named after US astronaut Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, it was founded in 1981 and currently has 28 aircraft in its collection, including a rare 2-seat TF-102 variant which was flown by former President George W. Bush, a F-100 Super Sabre flown by Apollo 11 Astronaut and first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, a B-25 that starred in the cult film Catch-22 as “Passionate Paulette”.

A special visit is planned to the American Huey 369 Museum it has 3 Bell UH aircraft fully restored to flight mode. The real surprise is the “Gun Ship 049 Vietnam 1965 -71, only two of these Gunships are restored to flight mode and flights will be available (weather permitting).

We then drive across Indiana into Ohio, arriving in Dayton we stay 2 nights at our deluxe hotel on a bed and breakfast basis; facilities include on-site restaurant, lounge, indoor swimming pool and free Wi-Fi.


DAY 3: Tuesday 30th July

We spend all day at the gigantic US Air Force Museum in Dayton – Ohio, it is the world’s largest military aviation museum featuring more than 360 aircraft, aerospace vehicles and missiles covering over 17 acres of indoor exhibits. Examine a Wright Brothers plane, sit in a jet cockpit and walk through a NASA shuttle crew compartment. There is an IMAX Theatre, art gallery, large aviation shop with hundreds of books plus gifts and souvenirs. Meals and snacks can be enjoyed at the Valkyrie cafeteria or the Refueling Café.

The outdoor Air Park features: a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III; Boeing EC-135E ARIA; Lockheed AC-130A Hercules; Lockheed C-60A Lodestar; McDonnell Douglas F-15A Eagle; Northrop YC-125B Raider; a replica Airfield Control Tower as used by the US 8th Army Air Force in England in World War II. You may need more than one full day at this fabulous museum to see everything at a leisurely pace.


DAY 4: Wednesday 31st July

We depart our hotel and enjoy a second full day at the National Museum of the US Air Force.

Alternatively, for those who wish, today we will visit Aviation Heritage at the Huffman Prairie Flying Field and Interpretive Centre, this 84-acre field is where Wilbur and Orville Wright perfected their flight skills in the Wright Flyer III, the world’s first fully controllable airplane. In the afternoon time is available to visit the famous Packard Car Museum.

At 17:00 we depart for Dayton Airport and check-in with American Airlines for our flight to Washington’s downtown airport. This flight is included in the Tour cost.

On arrival we board our waiting coach for the short transfer to Downtown DC Hotel where we stay 3 nights on a bed and breakfast basis. Facilities include free Wi-Fi and a small shop serving snacks, coffee, soft drinks etc. There are many restaurants, cafes and bars in the downtown Washington DC area.


DAY 5 and 6: Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd August

We have two (2) free days to explore Washington DC at your leisure. I recommend you visit the attractions just after their scheduled opening time to avoid crowds. Entry fee is free to the following attractions, National Air and Space Museum, White House, Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Hill, Union Station, Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon 911.

Memorial or just relax with a visit to amazing bars and restaurants or visit the Outlet shops for a great bargain. Let me take you to the best roof top bar overlooking the White House.Travel around the capitol is quick, easy, cheap and safe on the underground transportation system or take a cruise down the Potomac River to Maryland’s.


DAY 7: Saturday 3rd August

This morning our group depart for the Steven Udvar-Hazy (SUHC) Centre next door to Dulles International Airport. We will spend most of the day at this outstanding collection of Aircraft and space vehicles.

SUHC has an amazing collection of aircraft: ranging from a 1903 Wright Flyer, the famous B-29 “Enola Gay”, the Apollo 11 Command Module to the Space Shuttle Columbia. Also at the Centre is the Airbus IMAX Theatre, Donald D. Engen Observation Tower with its 360-degree bird’s-eye view of Washington Dulles International Airport and the surrounding area (good photos of landing airliners are possible), the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar where preservation of the NASM’s collections takes place.

In the afternoon we depart for Washington’s Dulles International Airport (a 15 min drive) and our flight connections back to Australia or to your next destination.
